Ajna is a telepathic/clairvoyant mutant member of the Cardinal Thieves who along with others, was a candidate for the head position of the guild until Jean-Luc LeBeau brought his son, Gambit to the aisle in order to compete for the position also.
Gambit ended up with the leadership after being targeted by Nil, another competitor for the title. Anja was appointed a spot on the Cardinal Council by Gambit as the guild's personal telepath.
