Choose or Die
Choose or Die
The movie Choose or Die is not reviewed well among fans or critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a dismal 23% from critics, and a somewhat shocking 34% audience score, as those usually skew quite a bit higher. On IMDB it has a 4.9/10, quite low for that site, and on par with many other bad horror movies I’ve seen reviewed there.

A broke student who plays an obscure 1980s survival computer game in pursuit of an unclaimed $100,000 prize. After a series of unexpectedly terrifying moments, she soon realises she’s no longer playing for the money, but for her own life. Netflix’s Choose or Die centres around the text-based retro horror survival game CURS>R and there are real-life inspirations behind the fictional game. Of course, a video game with an ancient curse encoded in its 8-bit programming doesn’t exist, but plenty of text-based and horror video games influenced CURS>R.
And rather than earning the jump scares or building tension, director Toby Meakins resorts to blasting these distorted computer sounds throughout his movie to try to keep you on edge, which proves to be nothing more than annoying. And to top it all off, this is just an ugly movie to look at and endure.
