Thanos was inspired by Darkseid, as his appearance was intentionally beefed up so he’d look more menacing like the DC Comics villain. Thanos was beefed up by Marvel Comics in order to look more like Darkseid. When the Mad Titan was originally conceived, he was based on the New God, Metron. Thanatos, in ancient Greek religion and mythology, is the personification of death. Thanatos was the son of Nyx, the goddess of night, and the brother of Hypnos, the god of sleep. He appeared to humans to carry them off to the underworld when the time allotted to them by the Fates had expired.

You’d think that Thanos was inspired by Darkseid, but that was not the case when I showed up. In my first Thanos drawings, if he looked like anybody, it was Metron. I had all these different gods and things I wanted to do, which became Thanos and the Titans. From his birth on Saturn’s moon of Titan, Thanos was always an outsider. He carries a Deviants gene, which causes his gruesome and misshapen appearance, with purple, rugged skin. He was born among the last sons of Titan’s original colonists: Mentor and Sui-San.

Is Thanos a Titan or an Eternal?
Thanos’ Eternals lineage. In the comics, Thanos is an Eternal, and one from a very important bloodline: His father, Al’ars, was the son of Kronos, who ruled the Eternals of Earth following a civil war that divided the original colony. Following his father’s death, Al’ars traveled the universe as the Mentor.
